Educational Psychology Services

The Local Authority provides Educational psychology services to support parents, schools and others in respect of children up to the age of 19. In the vast majority of cases, if your child is having difficulties at school, the school should be able to provide for your child without the need to involve an educational psychologist (EP).  In some cases, however, the school may want to involve an EP to discuss what more could be done to support your child.  EPs tend not to work directly with children, but rather provide their advice and help by talking with teachers, parents and other professionals.  Through these conversations, or 'consultations', EPs can help parents and teachers to understand or 'assess' your child's needs, and agree what needs to be done to meet your child's educational needs.  Usually, you would talk to the school SENCO first and they would involve the educational psychologist if further support was needed, but you can contact the service direct if you have difficulty.
