Nottingham City Centre’s intu Victoria Centre and Broadmarsh shopping centres both launched autism friendly services at the beginning of this month.

The launch took place on 30th March to celebrate Autism Awareness Week and highlighted some of the changes the centres have made, including:

• In-depth staff training across both shopping centresAutism East Midlands partner with intu to create autism friendly services
• The production of an autism friendly guide, autism awareness help cards and wrist bands which are displayed at customer service desks
• The appointment of autism awareness centre champions

The adaptations were made in partnership with the charity Autism East Midlands who commenced training of around 114 staff at the services in October of last year as well as performing an environmental audit of both shopping centres.

Nottingham intu General Manager Nigel Wheatley said: “It’s really important that our centres are comfortable environments for all of our customers.

“Our valuable partnership with Autism East Midlands has helped us to raise awareness of autism within our teams and is enabling us to continuously develop our centre environments for everyone.”
