For more than 30 years Sherwood Seals has been a treasured resource for parents, carers, staff and volunteers alike.

The club meets every Monday during term time at Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre in Westdale Rd, Mansfield and gives people of any age with a disability the chance to enjoy themselves in the pool, or work toward a range of informal and formal certificates.

The Centre’s Swimming Instructor Linda Bennett has been there from the club’s early days, has a wealth of knowledge regarding swimming technique and is something of an institution – having taught Rebecca Adlington as a youngster and spotted Paralympic swimming champion Charlotte Henshaw’s talent when she was a pre-schooler attending the group!

The love shown by the community is exemplified by Volunteer Wendy who’s attended the sessions each week for the past 18 years to support despite the fact that she can’t swim!

She says that she might have to learn soon as she’s made some of the children promises she may have to deliver on.

Wendy said: “I told one boy who wasstruggling with his confidence that if he can do it then I’ve got to.. and last week he jumped in!“

"It was such a large step it made me cry”.

Sessions take place from 6.30pm to7.30pm in the main pool, with a fun session featuring inflatables in the small pool afterward.

The group costs £5.50 per session, with an annual fee of £22.50 for swimming association membership.

Volunteers are on hand for support but parents must be prepared to enter the pool with their child.

Hoists and specialist equipment are available but please contact the group in advance to discuss your requirements.

Visit www.sherwoodseals.com, [email protected] or telephone 07902 471713 if you want to find out more, or offer your services as a volunteer.

What do carers say about the group?

"It’s a great idea. I tried my level best to teach my son on my own but I was getting nowhere. I’m incredibly happy with the help we get here - He’s got one to one support and he’s making progress!” – Jerald
