A group of young people got the gift of independence this Christmas as they claimed certificates celebrating completion of travel training.

They are all alumni of Nottingham City Council’s Independent Travel Training Service and received their certificate at a glamorous ceremony at the Council House in Nottingham’s Old Market Square last night (December 20th) at 5pm.

Presentations were made by Councillors David Mellen and Sam Webster during the evening– which also featured an inspiring video about the work of the Service, which provides tailored training aiming to develop a set of essential skills to enable independent travel.

One parent also spoke at the event regarding the change it had made his son – and the barriers he himself faced accepting the team’s support.

He said: “The team’s been fantastic - I was very apprehensive at first and they just instilled confidence in me as well.

“If you’re ever offered independent travel training grab it with both hands, because it does work.

“It’s really helped my son; allowing him to meet his friends and things like that - travel training has helped in every aspect of his life”.
