Preparing for Adulthood is an umbrella term used for the work carried out by education, social care and health professional services, alongside families, to prepare children and young people to get the best possible support to achieve their goals and aspirations.

We believe that children and young people with special educational needs and/ or disability should have access to support to enable them to have equal life chances as they make their way into adulthood. Some families find this time challenging because it is a period of change, where young people may be leaving educational placements, moving into adult services, and be losing support that they have previously relied upon.

Preparing for Adulthood should start from the early years. As children and young people grow and develop, schools, families and professional services should be looking at the goals and aspirations that children and young people have for their futures. This should always be a person centred approach with the child or young person at the heart of the discussions.

We know how important it is for families to have access to good quality information, advice, support and opportunities to develop their lives. Over the coming weeks we'll be putting together a directory of local services with tools to support children and young people with special education needs and/or disability to have the confidence to become more independent.

We'll cover:

1)      Employment and Training

2)      Independent Living

3)      Family, Relationships and Community

4)      Good Health

A lot of information about local services can be found on the Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Local Offers.
